The author of "The Prisoner of Zenda" and its sequel, "Rupert of Hentzau", gives us, in "The King's Mirror", a diary. As with the Zenda novels, "The King's Mirror" is written in the first-person. While this was acceptable -- if not ideal -- for those fine stories of action, intrigue, and romance, it is tiring in "The King's Mirror".
Here, the king relates in his journal his early years, from around the age of 8 until about 30. There is some dialogue between the king and other persons, but not a lot. There's no action, apart from an account of a brief pistol duel, no intrigue to speak of, and little romance. Instead, we hear the king's reflections on his governess, his tutor, his sister and her fat husband, his rather chilly mother, a few friends, a brief flirtation, and the very young woman who is to be his wife. It spoils nothing to say that there is no romance, if there is cordiality, between the king and his consort-to-be.
400+ pages of diary is a lot. The odd insight and the occasional bit of tension provide some welcome relief from a pretty dull exercise, but they don't justify reading this book.
